Direct Access to Physical Therapy Services
Chapter 298 of the Laws of 2006 provides access to physical therapy services for a limited time without a referral from a physician, dentist, podiatrist or nurse practitioner if the licensed physical therapist has practiced for three years. You may check the license status of individuals on this site. The law also requires a physical therapist treating without a referral to provide a form that will advise a patient of the possibility that the patient’s health care plan or insurer may not cover the expense. This law does not take effect until November 23, 2006. Please note that prior to this date, it is not lawful for physical therapists to treat patients without an appropriate referral.
Regulations and practice guidelines are now being developed and when finalized will be posted on this website. (August 18, 2006)
