October is National Physical Therapy Month!!
This year’s focus for National
Physical Therapy Month is preventing and managing obesity in children and
adults by stressing the importance of physical activity in our daily lives. In
addition to National Physical Therapy month, October is also breast cancer
awareness month.
How do these topics tie together?
The Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) shows that more than half of all adults do not get the
recommended amount of physical activity. This has led to an increase in obesity in adults and therefore an
increase in health problems associated with being overweight. Childhood obesity
has also risen drastically in the past 30 years, causing diseases and illness
to occur much earlier in life than in previous generations.Being overweight or obese increases the risk
of many diseases including breast cancer in women.
Physical Therapy can help!
Physical Therapists promote
physical activity by improving your ability to move, reduce pain, prevent disability,
and restore function.Your therapist
will teach you ways to be active without injuring yourself or aggravating an
old injury, and by using equipment you probably have around your house!Physical therapy can also help women
recovering from breast cancer related surgeries who may have resulting shoulder
problems or excessive scar tissue.
